Crafts in Burlington

A craft festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in Burlington at the Burlington High School and Middle School. There also will be open houses offered by businesses downtown.

There will be 150 booths of arts and crafts at the high school, where items will be handmade, homegrown or homemade, stated the news release. At the middle school, there will be a Craft and Gift Annex with 100 booths of arts and crafts, along with commercial items from home-based businesses.

According to the news release, this will be “one of the largest craft festivals in the area.”

Turkey shoot

Turkey Shoot Bingo will be played Saturday at the American Legion Hall in Lebo. Bingo will be played to win a turkey, with the drawing at 10 p.m. For more information, call (620) 256-6111.

EHS debate program ranked high

The Emporia High School Speech and Debate program continued to be nationally ranked for the eighth straight week, according to information from program teacher Scott Bonnet.

The program was ranked 49th out of more than 3,000 member schools in the National Forensics League last week and has been in the top 1 percent of all NFL schools for eight consecutive weeks.

The EHS debate team placed second of 24 schools in the team sweepstakes competition at the Shawnee Mission West Invitational tournament.

Freshmen Talia Smith and Barbara Haynes compiled a 6-1 record and finished third in the novice championship division of the tournament. Other debaters whose points contributed to the strong finish were Morgan Nail, Jordan Kiser, Mercedes Bounthapanya, Clarissa Negrete, Will Kraft, Samantha Richey, Alexia Ellis, and Meegan Dorcase.

EHS juniors Oscar Lara and Juan Rios took sixth place at the Wichita Trinity Academy Invitational debate tournament.  Freshmen Jordan Kiser and Morgan Nail finished fourth at the Shawnee Heights tournament.
