Emporia State Univerity Tyler Herrig fits siding on a Habitat for Humanity home in Emporia this weekend. The baseball team voluntered hours to Habitat and contributed by siding the East Street house.
Emporia’s latest Habitat for Humanity House is going up quickly and should be able to welcome its family, the Newcombs, after the first of the year.
The family, which includes mom Julie Newcomb, dad Don Newcomb II, 5-year-old twins, Chloe and Penelope, 3-year-old Baylie and 21-month-old Nehemiah, are hoping they can be in their new house by February, but progress at this point is in the hands of the rapidly approaching winter weather, said Julie Newcomb.
“It’s coming along nicely,” Newcomb said. “It just depends on what we can get done before the nasty weather sets in.”
Construction of the home began earlier this year. The walls went up in October. Newcomb said siding is up and crews began pouring the frame and form for the front porch and ramp. The roof is on but needs shingling and doors and windows have been installed.
As the receiving family of the home, the Newcombs have the chance to help build the home.
“It’s amazing just how much has been accomplished in a couple of months,” Newcomb said. “And for us to have the opportunity to put the labor into our own home is a blessing as well.”
Newcomb praised Habitat for Humanity.
“Habitat for Humanity is such an amazing organization and it truly is a blessing to be able to work with each of them hand in hand,” she said.
