Emporia Middle School is among the Kansas schools to receive Challenge Awards this fall from the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force.
EMS will receive a Certificate of Merit as a result of student performance on the eighth-grade reading assessment last spring. A total of 123 awards were presented to schools in 59 districts at a ceremony Thursday in Salina.
Challenge Awards recognize Kansas schools that are making a notable difference in student achievement despite facing significant challenges in their school population, according to a news release from the task force. The awards are based on Kansas Assessment results, the sample size, and the socio-economic status of those taking the test. A statistical model is used that includes test results and the percentage of the sample size that received free or reduced lunches.
The Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force was established 28 years ago to promote Kansas schools and their achievements. The task force sponsors the Governor’s Scholars Banquet to recognize the top one percent of graduating seniors and the Friends of Education Awards to recognize school volunteers.
