Opera at ESU

The ESU Department of Music presents opera scenes at 7:30 p.m. today in Heath Recital Hall on the ESU campus. The Emporia Symphony Orchestra Concert will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Albert Taylor Hall. The Jazz Concert will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, also at Albert Taylor Hall. Madrigal feast

Concert

Singer, songwriter and storyteller Lee Domann will perform during worship at the 8:15 and 10:35 a.m. services Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, 823 Merchant St. A former parish minister of the United Methodist Church, Domann combines music with humor, storytelling and dramatic presentations. He has been recorded by a variety of artists, including Kathy Mattea, Riders in the Sky, Mark Lowry, Jake Hess and the Gold City Quartet. Free-will offerings will be accepted. McCoy in Gridley

Award-winning author, screenwriter, investigative reporter and ESU professor Max McMcoy will be the guest speaker at 7 p.m. Monday at the Gridley branch of the Coffey County Library. McCoy will talk about his novel, “I, Quantrill,” which relates the last few weeks of the life of Confederate guerilla William Blake Quantrill.

McCoy is assistant professor of English, modern languages and journalism at Emporia State University. Other novels he has written are “Hellfire Canyon,” “A Breed Apart,” and “Moon Pool.”

Some of McCoy’s books will be available for purchase and signing. Door prizes will be furnished by the R.E. French Family Educational Foundation. Gridley Friends of the Library will serve refreshments.

Library events

Children’s Services at the Emporia Public Library will participate in “Kansas Reads to Preschoolers,” a project of the Kansas Center for the Book at the State Library of Kansas. The theme for this year is fitness featuring the picture book, “Wiggle,” by Doreen Cronin. In cooperation with the ESU Athletic Department, “Wiggle” will be read aloud at public libraries and at preschools and daycare centers in Emporia and Lyon County during the week of Nov. 15-21.

Fall storytimes at the Emporia Public Library begins with Mother Goose Time at 9:45 a.m. every Monday and Thursday for toddlers to 36 months; Pat-A-Cake Club, infants to 18 months, at 9:15 a.m. every Thursday; and Preschool Storytime, children two to five years, 10:30 a.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The EPL Family night will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday with the fitness theme, “Wiggle Time,” based on the Kansas Reads to Preschoolers project. The book being highlighted is “Wiggle” by Doreen Cronin. At 7 p.m., there will be a Family Fun Night, sponsored by the Lyon County Early Childhood Task Force. Families with children of all ages are welcome. Stories, crafts, activities, snacks and a chance to “wiggle” will be shared. Family Night is free, with no registration required.
