The Olive T. Jones natatorium at the Lee Beran Recreation Center, 313 W. Fourth Ave., will be closing at 3:30 p.m. today until a problem with the suspended ceiling has been repaired. The locker rooms will remain open.
“We will continue to serve the public and all non-aquatic related programs will take place as scheduled,” according to a news release. “We would like to thank the public for their cooperation and patience.”

They just repaired that ceiling, but obviously didn't do a very good job! I have noticed when I am swimming laps that the ceiling has been bulging in places for the past 6-9 months. I have mentioned this fact to the staff, and nothing has been done. So where are we supposed to go to swim laps now? One of the reasons that I like the membership at the Recreation Center is because they have a pool. The other thing I was concerned about was the fact that this past summer when the aquatic director job was open, a person was hired without posting the job, and holding interviews.(Is that legal?) I have some strong doubts that they hired the right person-I think a better choice would have been to hire Kyle Ediger, who is coaching for the Emporia Aquatic Club, and who is a very responsible individual. Perhaps if they would have hired the right aquatic director, we would still have a place to swim? Perhaps someone would have listened when I pointed out that the ceiling was bulging in places? When will this problem be corrected!
