The Emporia Animal Shelter desperately needs food to feed the kittens now housed at the shelter at 1226 Hatcher St.
"I just got a call from the animal shelter and they are in dire need of kitten food," said Judy Dieker, executive director of the Humane Society of the Flint Hills.
The Society purchased some kitten feed to get the shelter animals through the night, but considerably more will be needed immediately.
"We've got somebody on their way to the grocery store now to get them food to go through the night," she said. "For them to call and say we are in dire need, can you help us, yeah, they're very short. ... We can't purchase enough of what we need. Also, they need dog collars of various sizes. But those two things they need immediately."
Food and collars need to be taken to the shelter between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when staff and volunteers are available to receive the donations.
"If they can't get to the shelter, if they would call me, I can make some arrangements to get it picked up," Dieker said.
People who want to donate money for food may make checks payable to the City of Emporia, with a note at the left-hand corner that the money is for the animal shelter.
The telephone number for the shelter is 340-6345.

I'll put a sign up at work tonight to see if anyone there is interested in bringing some in.
Maybe other people who see this will follow the lead? =)

It's a horrible thing to say, but shouldn't these animals be euthanized if they cannot be cared for? Will they be euthanized anyway if no one adopts them? There are hungry children in this town, too.

Folks need to spay or neuter their pets so no unwanted litters happen. Folks also need to quit tossing animals out in the county - they find their way to someones home, if they don't get run over first. I have had half a dozen cats and a couple of dogs dropped off near our place. Do the right thing up front and this stuff doesn't need to happen.

I used to be compassionate towards strays, until I started having to deal with more and more strays, and I reside in the country so dogs end up running in packs and cats end up as some pretty nasty feral little devils. Nowdays I live by the motto, no collar its gone. I really wonder when the shelters are going to take a hint and just start putting all these animals down. Instead of wasting money on food, meds, and housing they should just be putting them down. It's a waste of money.

HOW CAN PEOPLE BE SO INSENSITIVE???????
These animals did not ask to be strays! The dogs and cats at the shelter are there because of irresponsible pet owners. We as human beings should show some compassion and help the shelter out. I try every month to buy a bag of dog or cat food and take it out to them. I have gotten 2 dogs from the shelter and they are the joy of my life. We should look at adopting from the shelter rather than buying from a bet store.
I BEG THE COMMUNITY TO LIVE BY THE MOTTO: "PAY IT FORWARD"
Please look into your hearts and spend $5-12 on a bag of food and drop it off at the shelter.

If I HAD $5 I would. But these are animals, regardless of their dearness, cuteness and innocence. If it comes to people vs. animals...I want to spend that $5 for the food pantry. And if people wouldn't act like animals and dump their pets, or refuse to have them fixed... A pet is a RESPONSIBILITY, not a whim. The whole thing stinks, and is very sad.

It's sad but cats breed worse than rabbits. We have 3 cats and all are fixed. If you can't afford to get them fixed and at least a rabies shot, you shouldn't have a pet. If the shelter didn't charge so much and had more convenient hours, they would probably adopt out a lot more animals out. It's not the kittens fault, they didn't ask to be born. It's the fault of the humans who let their pets breed without having homes for the offspring.

The shelter isn't open any more because they don't have the man power to be able to do so, I asked today while I was there dropping off 6 bags of food. Perhaps you'd like to volunteer your time.

The shelter doesn't charge nearly as much as breeders or even other shelters across the state. The actual "charge" is $20. The $45 deposit is to ensure the person will spay/neuter the cat, which they should be doing anyway. If people were responsible about spay/neutering they wouldn't have to ask for the deposit and the town wouldn't be in the situation it's in with unwanted pets. Other places charge over $100 to adopt an animal already spayed/neutered.
There is only one full time and two part time employees at the shelter. These people have to take care of on average 100 cats and 50 dogs. This means feeding and caring for that many animals, in a very small space, every day. There is only one person that volunteers their time on a regular basis.
Everyone is quick to say the animals need put down but I ask you to really think if you yourself could do it. Day after day putting down animals that only want to be loved. This is not made up, they will make it easy for you to do they trust you so much. If you think you can do it you should apply the next time a position opens up.
I donated some cat food and saw a large amount of donations. Way to go Emporia!!!

I have personally witnessed, multiple times, people dumping animals in the country. Called the cops, reported tags, nothing is done. Tryed calling animal control a few times, took over an hour for them to show up, by which time the strays in question were gone, wasting more tax money on gas and time spent for nothing. Conclusion .22 or .223 seems to be the best option for all.
The problem with any "fee" tied to adopting a shelter animal is that no one is going to pay $20 for an animal and $45 for a deposit when there are still so many pets out there breeding and one can get these "from the guy down the street" for free. In my opinion if you wanted to make a difference, euthanize more of these unwanted animals and use the money that would be spent caring for them to try and offer free shelter pets, fixed and ready to go. Obviously the solution you have now is not working, time to rethink the stratedgy.

Exactly what would be your answer for all the unwanted children in orphanages, etc. around the world .22, .223, .45, .38, .303, 7.62x51mm, that would solve the problem wouldn' t it !
Sounds like anything that is living and breaths had better stay away from you and your property !
You know the animals are not the problem ! Man and his inability to be responsible is the problem !
And shooting or killing anything and everything is not a responsible, human answer either !
Guns and irresponsible people who own them are an even bigger problem than stray animals !
Animals are not animals, man himself has become a bigger and more dangerous animal than any natural animal could ever be !

People are not animals, enough said.
If a stray dog or cat is on my property, yes I will shoot it, better than my family, or pets have to deal with the threat of rabies. I realize that people are the root cause of the problem, but that does not make the problem go away. Ever been chased up on your car by a pack of stray dogs? Ever see a large dog kill a cat? Not much humane about it. Try living in the country and dealing with these "problems", what am I supposed to do? Feed them all? Capture them myself? You want to come deal with strays post your phone number, I happily call you when they show up if you want to deal with them.

We've taken in several strays and found homes for a couple more but we can't afford to take care of them all. We've had stray dogs attack our cats which luckily made it to trees in time. We've had to put sick or aggressive animals down and it breaks my heart every time. So I do sympathize with the shelter having to put the animals down. It should be the last resort. Instead of spending money on an overly fancy courthouse, clock towers and whatnot, maybe the city should invest money in staffing the shelter. I got a cat from the CAT shelter in Topeka. She was spayed and had some shots for $45 or so. That was a long time ago but I'd think they could find vets in Emporia who'd neuter and spay the pets at a discount at the shelter. I'm much more likely to get a pet already fixed rather than pay a deposit, scrape up the money to pay the vet, go back and get my deposit back in the few hours they're open. Just a suggestion.

Have you ever been hunted by someone that wants to kill you and has the ability and capability to shoot back, as happens in combat ? Well I have and I have also been attacked and bitten by dogs, cats, racoons, possums and several species of animals and insects and man is the only animal who attacks and kills for the most trivial of reasons or no reason at all ! Animals are living and breathing creatures of God also ! Nough said, Macho Man !

Or better yet, how would you feel if one of your animals strayed onto your neighbors or someone elses property they shoot it ?
Oh, but I'll bet that is a different thing entirely isn't it? The only thing different is it would be you and something that belongs to you !

I'll field these:
Question #1
"If one of your neighbors livestock strays onto your property are you going to shoot it, since it does not belong there ?"
Nope, it's worth a lot of money and it's owner actually gives a damn about it enough to come over in a timely fashion, round up said livestock, and compensate me for any damages incurred.
Question #2
"Or better yet, how would you feel if one of your animals strayed onto your neighbors or someone elses property they shoot it ?"
They know better, my neighbors know them and I know my my neighbors pets, we extend each other courtesies, if they would happen to stray though, see my reply to question #1, and if they were a threat to my neighbor then they have every right to protect themselves, and that would be MY problem.
Direct your anger those causing the problem, not the ones left to clean up the mess. Just because a rabid dog can't shoot back does not mean it should not be put down, but if in your infinite wisdom you think that arming dogs, cats, coons, opossums, bugs, etc to even things out is a good idea, let me know how out works out for you.

How do you know that every stray animal you shoot is rabid ?
How do you know that the animal you shoot hasn' t just wandered off from someones house or that the animal is not a childs loved pet and the owner is not looking for it ?
How would you explain to some child that their lost pet has been shot by some inconsiderate man with a gun ?
Do your neighbors acually know better, than to shoot one of your animals or are they afraid of the trigger happy response by you ?
And I have directed my displeasure and anger at the City and the people causing the problem in general, with little results !
What would your suggestion be, shoot the people causing the problem, that seems to be your " shootist " attitude ?
People should fear and reject people with an attitude like yours !

Methusla,
If ever in that situation, the why and what for would be the last thing on my mind. Don't confuse paranoid and practical, you mentioned livestock earlier, you try explaining your mindset to a rancher that loses a calf or a colt to a pack of dogs, it happens often around this region. I guess we are all just a bunch of blood thirsty killers trying to protect our land eh? It's also funny you mention raccoons, opossums, and other wild animals. I rarely have issues with them, almost never have to deal with them because they are not nuisance. If people would take care of their animals then I would have no reason to do anything now would I? As I said before, direct your anger at those creating the problem, not those that have to deal with it.

Observation
I have given food to the animal shelter many times, as well as taken care of many unwanted, kittens, cats, dogs , that no one wanted, for many years now and am still doing so, along with several friends and other compassionat people in Emporia and yes have even cared for a stray possum or two that mysteriously showed up and am still taking care of those unwanted or lost animals that show up !
I suppose I could have taken them to goodoleboys area and let them be shot, but did not, would not and will not.
I have experienced enough death and violence in my life and do not nor tollerate any further violence, no matter the reason !
To me killing anything for no apparant reason is an irrrational, unthinking and unnecessary act, except in self-defense or in fear for your life or to survive and killing anything with out provocation is an act of " paranoia " , especially if that thing you shoot is or has done nothing to provoke such an act !
So think of me what you will !

How do you know that every stray animal you shoot is rabid ?
I don't, but I have 2 dogs and they protective of their territory, fights have and will ensue. Vet bills and my pets safety trumps a stray.
How do you know that the animal you shoot hasn' t just wandered off from someones house or that the animal is not a childs loved pet and the owner is not looking for it ?
I know my neighbors, and I know their animals. Collars, physical condition, behavior, etc are all tell tale signs.
How would you explain to some child that their lost pet has been shot by some inconsiderate man with a gun ?
That we need to take better care of our pets and not let them run loose, if something has a collar and is shot for no reason I'll take issue with it, I don't break that rule.
Do your neighbors acually know better, than to shoot one of your animals or are they afraid of the trigger happy response by you ?
2nd part of this question is stupid and I refuse to dignify it with a response, my neighbors call me if my dogs wander(which is VERY rare) I extend them the same courtesy. In fact a few of the more elderly ones have called me to come deal with strays that killed their animals or frightend them.
And I have directed my displeasure and anger at the City and the people causing the problem in general, with little results !
What would your suggestion be, shoot the people causing the problem, that seems to be your " shootist " attitude ?
People should fear and reject people with an attitude like yours !
My suggestion? Fine the hell out of them? Community service as animal control? Submit their names to list of people in the community not allowed to have pets and make it a reportable crime? Shooting people? Are you serious? I fear people that think that anmals should be afforded every right a human has, common sense please.
Your right to bear arms, does not mean shoot at will !
It does give me every right to protect my property and family, and according to the sheriff I am well within my rights to shoot a dog that is attacking one of mine or that I view as a threat to my safety. One lives right down the road by the way!
