Activities and special events are on the agenda as Veterans Tribute Week activities draw to a close.

Nancy Boyce will lead a discussion, “The War on the Home Front,” beginning at 7 p.m. tonight in the Lyon County Historical Museum. The presentation is part of the museum’s “Night at the Museum” series.

Veterans can receive a free breakfast at 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday at Presbyterian Manor, before the annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. in downtown Emporia. The parade will be televised by Cable One.

Announcers will be Jeanine McKenna, president and chief executive officer of the Emporia Chamber of Commerce, and Ron Thomas, general manager of Emporia’s Radio Stations.

The parade is presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1980 and American Legion Post 5.

Following the parade, a memorial service is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the All Veterans Memorial in Soden’s Grove.

The Emporia High School Band, under the direction of Bob Haselhuhn, will provide prelude music before the program and ceremonies.

Richard McCoy will be master of ceremonies, area veterans will raise the flag, and the Emporia High School Band will play the National Anthem.

The Rev. James Akers, Chaplain, will present the opening prayer, with the Pledge of Allegiance led by area Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts

Speakers will be Jesse Solis, Lt. Gov.Troy Findley and Akers, with Lt. Col. Lee Hoskins leading the closing prayer. Cleat Buckbee will lead a combined firing squad made up of VFW and American Legion members in a salute to departed comrades and Frank Sloat will command the color guard before members of the Emporia High School Band play “Taps” with echo.

Veterans and their families will gather after the memorial ceremony for free ham and bean feeds at noon at the American Legion, 2921 W. 12th Ave., and VFW Post 1980, 932 Graphic Arts Road.
