Unmotivated Spartans drop 3rd-place game

TOPEKA — Playing for third place was a buzzkill, and not surprisingly, Emporia High coach Angel Cornejo found enthusiasm for Saturday afternoon’s game in short supply.
The Spartans ended one of the best boys soccer seasons in school history with a 4-1 loss to Liberal in the Class 5A State third-place game at Hummer Sports Park, concluding the year with a 13-7-1 record and a claim as 5A’s fourth-best team in 2009.
