Third quarter meltdown

Monday, November 9, 2009

A blocked punt led to a Washburn touchdown in the 2nd half of play of Emporia State and Washburn. Emporia eventually fell 56-35 after a tied halftime score of 28-28.

Garin Higgins said he wished there wouldn’t have been a halftime on Saturday.

Emporia State was playing its best football of the season, had rallied from two early special teams mistakes and a 14-0 deficit to tie the game at 28, and it looked as though a season full of disappointment might end on a good note.

Once the third quarter started, the team that finished with just two wins showed up.

Poor rushing defense, inexcusable mental breakdowns and a punt block turned into 28 unanswered points in the third quarter for Washburn and another Emporia State loss, 56-35.
