Free hay to help keep dogs warm this winter will be distributed on Saturday, Nov. 14, by the Humane Society of the Flint Hills.
The group sponsors the hay distribution each fall, to provide bedding and warmth for dogs that are kept outside in dog houses.
“During the cold winter months, dogs need to have shelter from the cold, hay to lay on, and a cover on their dog house doorway to keep the cold wind out,” Executive Director Judy Dieker said in a news release.
Water needs to be checked often to make sure it is not frozen, and extra food needs to be provided throughout the cold weather.
“Remember that they eat more because they are burning more calories to try and stay warm,” Dieker said.
The hay giveaway will begin at 8 a.m. and run until 11 a.m., or until the hay is gone. Distribution will be done from the East Emporia Veterinary Clinic at Sixth Avenue and Exchange Street.
