THE EMPORIA HIGH Spartans football team, which edged Salina South 33-27 last week to win the the Class 5A District 5 championship in Salina. The Spartans will take on McPherson tonight in the Class 5A playoffs at Welch Stadium.
F The Emporia High Spartans soccer team, which beat Salina Central on Saturday to win the Regional title. The team went on to beat Newton in their State quarterfinal and will play St. Thomas Aquinas today in Topeka.
F The Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau, for organizing the many events taking place to celebrate Veterans Week in Emporia, the founding city of Veterans Day.
F Members of the ESU Hornets volleyball team, for their victory over No. 20-ranked Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday. Tonight the team will play No. 24 Pittsburg State at 7 p.m. at White Auditorium.
F Kansas State Teachers College alums Brig. Gen. Art and Sue Bloomer, who donated $150,000 to name the Veterans Hall of Honor in ESU’s Memorial Union. The gift comes as part of the school’s project to renovate the Union.
F EHS student journalist Aubrey Armitage, who wrote an article for online student newspaper The Echo that was selected as one of 10 top stories for the online National Edition at my.hsj.org, a Web site that features teen journalism around the nation.
F The members of Messiah Lutheran Church, who have restored the city’s Nativity scene, which hasn’t been displayed for three years because of deterioration. The set, purchased by the city in the late 1940’s, will be displayed at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church starting on Thanksgiving weekend.
