Emporia High fans have two huge athletic events to be excited about, happening Friday night in different cities. So EHS has decided to provide a way for fans to enjoy both as much as possible.
At 5 p.m. at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka, the Spartan soccer team will take on St. Thomas Aquinas in the Class 5A State semifinals. At 7 p.m. at Welch Stadium, the football team hosts McPherson in the first round of the 5A playoffs.
A pep bus carrying a maximum of 50 students will leave EHS at around 3:30 p.m. Friday and head to Topeka for the Spartans’ match against St. Thomas Aquinas. After the soccer game is over, the bus will quickly head back to Emporia, which should give those students enough time to catch a good portion of the Emporia-McPherson game.
“We’re expecting a large crowd (at Welch),” EHS athletic director Britton Hart said. “We’ve got one more ticket-taker in the booth, because you can’t use passes for the game. But I think we’re pretty excited about the enthusiasm around all our athletics, for all our sports. ... I think some people are really excited about both football and soccer, and hopefully they’ll come out, support our kids and come to the ballgame Friday.”
