Remembering the Titans

Character, attitude, belief, trust and an embrace of diversity. As those principles carried Coach Herman Boone’s Alexandria, Va., Titans to a state high school football championship, so too did they form the substance of his speech at ESU’s Bonner and Bonner Diversity Lecture Wednesday night.
The coach, who faced controversy when he became Alexandria’s first black head football coach after its schools were integrated, united his team and helped it go on to compile a 13-0 record and win the championship. His story led to the film “Remember the Titans,” in which he was portrayed by Denzel Washington.
Before the lecture, Coach Boone stopped at Welch Stadium to address the Hornets football team, which is facing adversity of its own. With a 2-8 record so far this year, the team has seen a multitude of injuries and disappointments. On Saturday, the Hornets will play Washburn at Welch Stadium.

Once again I would love to read the on-line edition of the paper, but it isn't available. As of 3:20 pm the link for it has been up for almost two hours, but the link doesn't go anywhere.
