If an incident were to occur that caused a mass evacuation at Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corp. in Coffey County, Lyon County would receive the bulk of evacuees.
Lyon County commissioners learned of the host plan with Coffey County during their Wednesday study session. Commissioners discussed the plan with Rick Frevert, Lyon County Emergency Management; Russell Stukey, Coffey County Emergency Management; and Timothy East, a supervisor at Wolf Creek. Several city and county officials listened in on the conversation, which took place in open session.
The groups talked about a new contract version, which includes compensation from Coffey County to Lyon County for its role in being a host county in case of an emergency at Wolf Creek.
Under the current agreement, four-fifths of the evacuated population go to Lyon County and the remainder evacuate to Anderson County. This would be in a worst-case scenario — something that has never happened with commercial nuclear power plants, East said.
