Henderson finishes 3rd at State

Olpe’s Katelyn Henderson couldn’t quite repeat as State champion at Saturday’s Class 2A cross country run at Wamego, finishing in third place, and Olpe’s boys finished second as a team.

Henderson, a junior, ran a time of 16 minutes, 37.60 seconds, behind Ally Balderston of Sacred Heart (16:24.25) and Page Wells of Wichita County (16:35.20).

The Olpe boys earned second place with 77 team points, 19 behind winners Berean Academy. Leading the way for the Eagles were the eighth-through-10th place finishes by Lance Sadler (17:44.55), Colton Bess (17:50.96) and Colby Nuessen (17:54.92). Ethan Hall finished in 34th place for the Eagles, Kyle Barnhart finished 46th, Derek Nuessen finished 72nd and Noah Haag finished 95th.

Heights’ Smith finishes fifth

Kimberly Smith of Northern Heights finished fifth at the Class 3A State cross country run, leading the Ladycats to a fifth-place tie in the team scores.

The sophomore Smith, who finished fourth at State last year, clocked a time of 16:13.16 on Saturday at Wamego to claim the fifth-place spot. Ashley Heston finished in 25th place for the Ladycats, Savanna Chestnut finished 39th, Elizabeth Karr ended up 66th and Chelsea Carr was 74th. As a team, Heights ended up with 147 points, tying Minneapolis for fifth. Freshman Jenna Snell of Ellinwood won the individual crown with a time of 15:38.19, and Riley County won the team title with 82 points.

Justin Heston competed in the State meet for Heights on the boys side, finishing in 32nd place.
