Wichita — Many athletes in Raelyn Pearson’s position wouldn’t see a need to redeem themselves after a top-five State finish.
But it’s Pearson’s last State meet, and finishing fifth in the discus wasn’t good enough to satisfy her. So with the shot put remaining on her agenda this morning, the Emporia High senior had her sights set on a better performance to conclude her career. Or, as most might say, an even better one.
“I felt like I wasn’t as focused as I should’ve been,” Pearson said, “and I couldn’t quite figure out what I was doing incorrectly.”
Nonetheless, Pearson’s discus throwing still provided the highlight for Emporia High at Day One of the State track and field meet at Cessna Stadium. Her throw of 121 feet, 5 inches was good for fifth place, her second straight top-five finish at Wichita in that event. She finished fourth last year.
