Inmate creates fracas at jail

Officers called in to assist

Saturday, May 30, 2009

Lyon County Sheriff’s officers literally talked an inmate down from the ceiling Thursday evening at the Lyon County Jail.

Undersheriff Richard Old said that officers were called to the jail about 6:30 p.m. for a disturbance in progress.

“Upon their arrival, they found that an inmate had climbed up into the suspended ceiling above the D Pod day room,” Old said. “Even though the inmate had gotten above the suspended ceiling, the construction of the jail is such that the inmate was still inside the secure confines of the structure, within either steel or masonry structural elements.”

Officers eventually managed to talk the inmate into coming down and he was handcuffed.

Old said the man continued to be verbally abusive to the officers and threatened to do bodily harm to them. Prior to his being returned to a cell, he spat on some of the officers.

The incident lasted about 45 minutes until he was locked back down in a cell. No one was seriously injured and only minor damage was done to the suspended ceiling, Old said.

The case is under investigation and will be forwarded to the Lyon County Attorney’s office for review when the investigation is complete.

I've heard that being in jail can make you want to climb the walls but I thought that was just a figure of speech. Guess not. ;)
