The Chase County Bulldogs just couldn’t get the bounces to go their way, falling to the reigning 2-1A state champion Pittsburg-Colgan Panthers 11-1 in a late-forming run-rule game at the State tournament on Friday at Soden’s Grove.
The game had the making of an intriguing matchup. The Panthers have been the 2-1A State Champions for five consecutive years, and eight times since 1997, while the Bulldogs probably sneaked up on some in reaching the State tournament.
“Nobody expected this team to make it to State this year,” pitcher Shawn Talkington said. “(Losing five seniors) and replacing them with freshmen, no one expects us to be .500 except for us. We made it here to show everybody we could still play.”
