Card shower Tuesday

Josephine Krueger will celebrate her 85th birthday Tuesday. The family request a card shower for her, with cards to be sent to 110 W. Sixth Ave., Apt. 302, Emporia, KS 66801.

Wlidflower tour

The 17th annual Flint Hills Prairie Wildflower and Pasture Tour will be held June 11, one at 1:15 p.m. and another at 6:15 p.m.

Tour participants can meet on Highway 177 in Matfield Green in front of the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe office (old Matfield Green Post Office) or at the Cassoday Grade School in Cassoday. The school-bus caravan will proceed off main roads with stops by pasture sites in Chase County. Each bus will have a guide. Gary Kilgore, KSU extension agronomist emeritus, will help identify plants and talk about their value in our ecosystem.

The tour is sponsored by the Chase and Butler county extension services and the Chase County Conservation District. Donations are requested to help defray expenses. Registration is required. Each tour will be limited to the first 200 persons.

Teen reading program

All teenagers entering grades 7-12 may register for the 2008 Teen Summer reading program, “Express Yourself at Your Library.” Registration has begun at the library reference desk on the second floor. The reading program concludes July 21. Registration can be done online at www.emporialibrary.org; click on Teen Summer Reading Registration 2009.

Capoeira Club

All teenagers entering grades 7-12 are also invited to join the Capoeira Club. Participants are to “come dressed in comfortable clothes and ready for a work-out,” stated a news release. Capoeira is described as an Afro-Brazilian folk art that grew out of the music, dance and fighting traditions of different West African tribes, beginning in the early 1500s.

There will be five sessions from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to see demonstrations and learn the techniques: June 3, June 17, July 1, July 15 and July 29. Sessions will be led by Jon Leach, coordinator of the ESU Capoeira Club. See the club MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/capoeira.

Anime club

The Emporia Public Library Anime Club is for Emporia is for Emporia teenagers 13 to 18 years old. The first meeting will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 10 in the Chidren’s Meeting Room. The club is viewing “Trigun” this summer.
