All year long, Brandon Gentz leaped under the radar.
He usually placed high in his jumping events — third place, fourth place, that neighborhood. But the Emporia High sophomore didn’t have any first-place finishes — until last week’s Regional meet at Welch Stadium.
Suffice to say, Gentz picked a great time to launch the best jumps of his young career. He won Regional championships in both the long jump and triple jump and added a third-place finish in the high jump. He set a personal record in all three events, giving him tremendous momentum going into the State meet, which began this morning at Wichita’s Cessna Stadium.
“Coach (Phil) Thornton’s been telling me all year that I could get these marks,” Gentz said. “And I never really knew if I could all year. But I knew, with his coaching and my athletic ability, that I’d get ’em at some point. And it came at the right time at the Regional meet.”
