Fewer than 10 smoke detectors remain to be given away in Lyon County, according to Emporia Fire Marshal Tom Andrews.
The department was given 450 smoke detectors to provide at no charge to homes owned and occupied by people over 65 or by families with children. Income is not a factor.
Firefighters will install the detectors, which have been provided through a $1,699 grant from the Kansas Fire Injury Prevention Project of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Firefighters also will go over materials with homeowners to ensure that recipients have been educated in fire prevention, developing an escape plan, and other aspects of fire safety, Andrews said.
For information, call the fire department, 343-4230, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Ask for Lawana.
