Mesa State's Marty Rover (39) beats the throw to Emporia State first baseman Kenny Burkhead (32) in in the sixth inning of Monday's game during the NCAA D-2 Baseball Championship at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C

On the way to Warrensburg, Mo., for the South Central Regional tournament, Emporia State watched the movie “Miracle,” about the 1980 USA hockey team that upset Russia on its way to winning the gold medal at the Winter Olympics.

The Hornets followed their viewing with a 23-0 win over Angelo State, and so a tradition started. With a 30-minute bus ride from their hotel to the field in Warrensburg, they would start the movie during coach Herb Brooks’ speech before the Russia game and watch until the end of the game.

Emporia State assistant baseball coach Jason Santangelo argues a call with first base umpire Larry Howard during the game against Mesa State on Monday in the NCAA D-2 Baseball Championship at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C.

Since the bus ride from their hotel in Cary, N.C., to the USA Baseball practice facility is much shorter, they still start at Brooks’ speech and watch until the end of the first period, when the Americans tie the game at 2-2.
