On the way to Warrensburg, Mo., for the South Central Regional tournament, Emporia State watched the movie “Miracle,” about the 1980 USA hockey team that upset Russia on its way to winning the gold medal at the Winter Olympics.
The Hornets followed their viewing with a 23-0 win over Angelo State, and so a tradition started. With a 30-minute bus ride from their hotel to the field in Warrensburg, they would start the movie during coach Herb Brooks’ speech before the Russia game and watch until the end of the game.
Since the bus ride from their hotel in Cary, N.C., to the USA Baseball practice facility is much shorter, they still start at Brooks’ speech and watch until the end of the first period, when the Americans tie the game at 2-2.
