Stand up, fight back!

TO ALL cable users!!
We are getting another increase of $4 plus tax!
We don’t get any more channels and two that we do have are cut off sometimes!
My son lives in Missouri and says cable is a lot cheaper than here.
What can we do? So many people are shut-ins and that is their source of enjoyment.
Well — we can all boycott and say, “Shut me off.” If we all would stand together, we could get this high cost alleviated. We can get movies (the library lets you get them on your card — free) and listen to our radios to get the latest news and weather. We can read good books and stop their high costs and fewer channels. I had a satellite and it was cheaper and had many, many more channels.
Why are they ripping us off?
Stand up and say “No more!” They will have to lower the price to get us back.
Stop them. Say “No more high cost.”

As soon as someone can start a cable company, in which you only pay for the channels you want, thats when ill go back to cable, till then we are perfectly happy with no cable at all. When the ONE and only cable company in town does this, isn't that a monopoly...?

Yes, it IS a monopoly and a poor one at that. Topeka cable subscribers received the Disney Channel for years at no additional cost long before that was offered here. A friend of mine who worked for the Topeka company made a visit at one point and was appalled and shocked at the outdated equipment in use at that time. The one good thing going for the monopoly is the reasonably good repair service. I've heard, and I cannot testify to the accuracy, is that the satellite companies' service isn't worth a darn.

I have been a satellite subscriber for years and I will never change. It does get a little dicey during thunderstorms that have heavy lightning but the signal is digital and spotless otherwise. Basketball, football and hockey games in HD look like the athletes are going to come out of my TV and rough up my couches. In addition to that, the packages are much better on Direct TV than Dish network. I can see all of the NFL, NBA, College sports and NHL contests for extra money. Depending on one's love for each sport, the value is definitely there. For me it certainly is.
As to the tech service and support, we have received competent help with our issues at our residence and excellent support online and the phone. I gave up on cable a long time ago.

I agree about viewing via dish, but the few times we've needed service it wasn't pretty...also I wish I were only billed for what I watch...we don't care about sports so you can imagine how many channels we've blocked...but we're still paying for them. Still, it beat the devil out of Emporia cable...we have it in one of our businesses and it is "off air" far more than the satellite dish.

I don't have cable--and won't---but I always see on the neighbor's or other friends' that it cuts out then clicks when it comes back and it is very irritating. Why does it do that and why do people pay for it?

YY4U, excellent links, especially that second one. Even more than technical info, they both highlight the ingenuity of humans no matter where they live on the planet.
I must disagree with you on there never being anything on TV. I only have basic cable, yet I find many interesting programs, particularly on PBS or C-Span, or news channels. I am a quilter, and while I sew, I often listen to audio books, but I also like to listen to TV in the background.
Remember too, that many folks are shut-ins or elderly and rely on TV for something to occupy their minds.
However, despite the fact that TV does indeed play such a service to some folks, I will agree with many on here that cable is charging far too much for services. When you look at the basic lineup, many of those channels don't offer anything but advertising. I don't believe people should pay for 24-hour advertising channels.
I wonder what would happen if everyone in town, all at once, cancelled their service. Even though I enjoy my CNN and C-span, I'd join the fight just to send the message that people still have power.
Finally, power of a different sort -- our veterans. Remembering them this Memorial Day. Semper Fi!

I certainly agree with complaints about high cost and low return with Euphoria's cable service. For tier two cable and high speed (lol) internet service I pay just a hair under one hundred dollars per month. And I would be willing to join in a protest movement by dropping service if one was to be organized.
Before doing so however I would want to get hooked up with a different internet provider so I wouldn't have to miss out on talking with my friends...(and a few enemies).... on the Gazette Forum pages.

We switched to Direct back in March and love it. We have only had 2 occasions where we lost signal (for a total of maybe 10 minutes) because of VERY heavy rain.
I tried to stay with Cable One on 2 occasions. I called to tell them that I wanted to add internet to our package but I was told I didnt qualify for the bundle rate since at that time we already had cable. I was trying to GIVE them business and they didnt budge one bit. With all the dishes popping up around town, you would think they would have welcomed the chance to make more money.

I don't know how the cable companys intend on staying in business, given the way they are ripping of their customers !
So far, I believe that Cable One has dropped 4 channels from their line up ! Half of the time the screen is totally black with a message that says either lost signel or poor quality signal and yet they are raising their rate by $4 + tax per month !
Also in case you haven't realized it, Cable Ones television signals are received by an array of satellite dishes located on west 15th ave and then transmitted over cable lines!
As it is at the present time, with basic Cable ONE, phone service and internet service, I pay approxiamately $130 per mo. and if cable raises another $4+tax per mo. that will be approx. $135 to $140 per mo. I've done the math and its not going to be feasible for me to continue with what I have at present !
I am seriously considering looking into a Direct tv, unlimited local and long distance phone service and high speed dsl internet service from AT&T for $99.99 per mo. and the Direct tv is the 200 channel package !
I am not real crazy about all the radio stations included in all of the sattelite packages, but the radio stations come with the packages and cannot be dropped !

Why is it that we can not get another cable company in town. Does Cable One have a contract and if so when is it up? Do the city commissioners make this decision for us? I visited out of town friends the other day that have Cox and they were amazed what I paid for Basic Cable. I pay nearly twice as much as they do for basic.

We dont use T.V. by choice, but i agree the price is too much for shut ins who rely on T.V. for their sole entertainment. During the holidays our mailbox frequently contained low priced ads for satellite hook ups, the prices looked reasonable even for someone on a fixed income.

Cable, Direct, Dish all have to pay programmers to dist. their presennations. It is not just all free. Many channels are free and many are crap too.

DISH 100 channels with locals, Starz, 2 DVRs (can't live without) and 2 extra receivers + AT&T basic phone + DSL = $120 month, all in one package...Can't beat that!
Better customer service, better installation service and cheaper than cable.
(and no I don't work for DISH)

AT&T local service only plus DSL internet: apprx $60 per month. Use a prepaid calling card: $15=500 min. Watch TV online when I get around to it without setting any kind of recorder and still can't find time to watch all the shows available that I intend on watching. I know this doesn't work for everyone, but it could work for a LOT more than who currently takes advantage of it.
I'm still really curious as to why cable has that pop and click blackout many times per minute.

Sorry I haven't responded before now, but have been out of town !
Go to www.AT&T.com, click on bundles and look for the bundle you want and then click on that particular bundle.
I might add that you will need to commit to a certain length of time contract, as with all tv programming that involves sattelite tv programming and the $99.99 fee will also increase by $21 after 12 months as is standard for most all sattelite tv programming ! However even after the $21 increase, this deal will still be less than what I currently pay or will have to pay, considering that in order to get near 100 channels from cable One, it will cost close to $100 dollars, just for tv programming alone and if you tack on cable internet capability and phone service, your are talking close to $ 200 per month !

I quit Cable a long time ago (approx 3 years ago) and switched to Dish Network in a bundle package with ATT. I pay $90 (including taxes/fees) per month for Dish Network, home phone and internet package. All on one bill which makes things much easier. I also get at least 3 weeks before my bill is due...unlike Cable One used to do. They would send the bill and it would be due that next week. They sent out a salesman a few months ago and he was pushy and tried to make me believe that he could provide me with a better package. I asked him how much it would be for what I have now, all he could say was "wow, but you probably lose reception don't you". Desperate...yes...MONOPOLY...yes!!

Well I just read through all the comments and agree that the Cable company is charging too much compared with Cox in Topeka. I've considered switching to Dish since I have DSL and phone service with AT&T. However, I read all the fine print on their advertisements and added up all the additional fees for DVR, movie channels and the price comes out about the same when the initial fees change from special period to regular fees. There may be more savings if only getting basic channels and DSL with phone service. I think if you add in the DVR and extras the cost is similiar. My kids live 4 blocks from me and have Dish with ATT and have lost their service several times with storms. They just listen to the radio or check the radar on weather channel on internet. I'm upset that Cable has dropped 2 of the Wichita stations since my family is in western ks and I used to live there too so like to hear their news. So much of the Topeka news is about the Capital or politics. KAKE is a good news channel and now we can't get it. I also don't think they shoulld charge extra for digital when I thought everything was digital now. They tried to tell me there was a difference so guess I'm not understanding that high tech stuff. I will have to say they have excellent service most of the time. I've heard that service for Dish isn't all that great. All that being said----I'm getting really sick of Cable always increasing their fees.

I hope Cable is reading this but I doubt it or that it would make any difference. I like the idea of watching TV shows on the internet. Can you do that with all shows on all channels? Don't know how that works.

Each of the major networks has a list of shows that they have on a player on their site. Not all shows are available there (most popular ones are), but there are sites like sidereel.com that provide links to players of those and most other popular shows. Lifetime even puts up some stuff and Discovery/TLC runs "specials" of their shows (samples if you will). I have no idea about some of the other channels like USA.
