An injury to junior goalkeeper Melanie Nuessen sent her to the hospital and weakened Emporia High both offensively and defensively, derailing the Spartans’ chances of upsetting Salina Central in their Regional semifinal matchup Tuesday night in Salina.
Nuessen kept the Spartans in a scoreless tie before getting kicked in the face with about 22 minutes left in the game, and junior forward Jordan Sosa moved from the front of Emporia’s attack to replace Nuessen in goal. Sosa did a credible job, according to EHS coach John Decker, but the Mustangs still notched two goals in the last 11 minutes to win 2-0, ending Emporia’s season.
