Sean Carr struck out a school-record 17 and pitched a complete-game two-hitter in Council Grove’s 6-1 win over Mission Valley on Monday in the first round of the 3A Regional.
“Sean Carr had an amazing outing tonight with the record,” Council Grove coach Joe Buchanan said. “He struck out 17 of the 26 he faced. And although we didn’t hit it real well, we got good production from the middle of our lineup. We were pretty business-like tonight.”
The Braves took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles from Derek Ziegenhirt and Wes Roddy. Broc Finch doubled and scored on Travis LeMay’s RBI singe to add another run in the second.
LeMay and Maas scored in the fourth inning on another Ziegenhirt single. Maas triple and scored on an error for Council Grove’s final run in the sixth.
Maas led the Braves at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a triple, sacrifice bunt and a walk. Ziegenhirt went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs.
The Braves, who improved to 14-7, advance to the second round where they will meet defending state champion Silver Lake on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The regional championship will follow at 7 p.m. with the winner of the Council Grove-Silver Lake game facing the winner of the Rock Creek-Rossville game.
“Now nothing to lose on Wednesday against the defending state champ Silver Lake,” Buchanan said. “It ought to be fun. There should be some great baseball in these semi-final matchups.
