WARRENSBURG, MO. — Emporia State is headed back to the World Series for the first time since 2006.
Emporia State beat Central Missouri 15-6 on Monday for the South Central Regional championship.
The Hornets jumped out to a 14-0 lead with some help from the Mules’ defense. Three UCM errors led to a seven-run third inning and another big offensive day for the Hornets.
The Hornets had 18 hits, but only six of their 15 runs were earned. The Mules committed five errors, while the ESU defense was perfect.
ESU starter Colby Killian pitched five scoreless innings before giving up four runs in the sixth inning. Killian, who was named the regional MVP, was almost unhittable until the sixth. He gave up just one hit until the sixth, and the one hit took a bad bounce on ESU second baseman Jacob White.
Kevin Wempe, Kenny Burkhead, Caleb Williamson and Anthony Dreiling all had three hits apiece. Dreiling led the Hornets with three RBIs. Wempe had ESU’s only home run.
Emporia State will play Grand Valley on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the World Series in Cary, N.C.
