Riley County
rips Heights
Northern Heights’ baseball team took two abbreviated poundings from Riley County, a team in its Class 3A regional, on Tuesday at Riley County.
The Wildcats lost the first game 22-5 in three innings. The second game was called after two innings with the score 21-4. In Game One, Riley County scored five in the first, 10 in the second and seven in the third. Needing five runs in the bottom of the third to keep the game going, Heights managed just three.
“Falcon hitters used us for a tuneup before their regionals,” Heights coach Shawn Wilson said.
Casey Atchison was one bright spot for Heights in Game One, going 2-for-2 and driving in a run. Garrett Schumann doubled, walked and drove in a run and James Crabtree went 1-for-2 with a two-run single.
Heights put inexperienced pitching on the mound for Game Two. Matt Wiggins, who had pitched just one inning all year, gave up five runs in the first inning, then was charged with another run in the second. Cole Donelson, who hadn’t pitched yet this year, entered the game and, in Wilson’s words, “fell on a grenade for us.” Donelson surrendered 15 runs and nine hits before getting out of the inning.
Atchison and Cody Britton both went 2-for-2, and Atchison had two RBIs. Donelson went 1-for-2 and drove in a run.
Heights plays at Chase County today in a makeup doubleheader, which will be the regular season finale for both teams.
