Madison’s animal control officer, Danita Schimmelpfenig, has been nominated as Pet Humanitarian of the Year by The Pet Connection in Mission.
The nomination recognizes the pet-rescue work Schimmelpfenig has done in cooperation with Kansas City-area organizations.
She will be honored at a public dinner and auction on June 20 at Sterling Hall, 2420 Merriam Lane, Kansas City.
People who want tickets to the event to support Schimmelpfenig’s nomination may make arrangements by calling Melody Kelso, executive director of The Pet Connection, at (913) 671-PETS (671-7387). The cost is $15 for people involved in rescue organizations and $35 for people not involved in rescues. The ticket includes dinner and a free raffle ticket. A cash bar also will be available.
Nominees for the top award will talk about their work with animal rescue, and those who attend will vote to determine the winner of Pet Humanitarian of the Year. The winner will receive $1,000 to give to the pet organization of his or her choice. Schimmelpfenig said she would use the money for the pet learning center she has started.
Winners in each category of competition will receive a Paw Award and an opportunity to win prizes for their rescue groups. More than 200 prizes will be given away, including veterinary services, microchipping, beds, crates and other pet-related items.
More information is available from Kelso or from Schimmelpfenig, (620) 437-2364.
