Friday Thoughts

Friday, May 15, 2009

THERE ARE SOME THINGS in this world I have a hard time understanding. For instance, recently I was reading USA Today about a woman in El Dorado who was convicted of animal cruelty because she shot the neighbor’s dog when it came on her property.

In the same newspaper, there was story about how military researchers were putting body armor on pigs, strapping them in Humvees and then blowing them up to simulate IED explosions. What I found interesting is in that article there was no mention of anyone being charged with animal cruelty.

I am not sure of the difference between shooting an animal and blowing one up. But I can only assume that because the researchers put body armor on the pigs, then perhaps it’s not animal cruelty?

I never heard why she shot the dog, either. Was it just pooping on her lawn or was it aggressive and threatening her or her pets? I have shot an aggressive dog before to protect myself and my dog. I hated to do it; it wasn't the dog's fault its owner made it mean. But I wasn't going to allow a 70+ pound dog take me down either. I was in my legal rights according to the county law, too.

I'm not too crazy about the idea of them blowing pigs up but it's to be sure our soldiers are protected. I place the value of a soldier's life above a pig's life. I know I'll set off a firestorm with that comment but it's my honest opinion. I buy products that don't use animal testing since I think it's unnecessary to pour mascara in a rabbit's eyes to check for irritation. But at times it is necessary to use animals in testing. Most of us eat animals and have no problem with that and we don't know how humanely they were treated before slaughter. We need to treat animals with respect as much as possible but realize sometimes animals are sacrificed to preserve human life.

I think it's OK as long as they ate the pigs after they were done blowin' em up. Other wise it would just be a waste. I bet that would be some good eatin'. It's already smoked and probably real tender too. (no animals were harmed in the writing of this satirical post)
