Appointed to panel

Rhonda L. Moreland of Americus has been appointed to the Governor’s Mental Health Planning Council.

The appointment, effective May 7, was to fulfill an unexpired term that will end June 30, 2001.

Moreland has been involved for several years at local, state, and national levels with issues involving mental health.

She has been president of the state consumer council for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, has represented Kansas at a four-day national mental health leadership conference in New Orleans, and worked on the annual NAMI walk in Topeka, among other roles she has filled as a mental health advocate.

Moreland’s appointment was made by Gov. Mark Parkinson.

“Your willingness to serve the people of Kansas is commendable, and I hope you find your service rewarding,” Parkinson wrote in a letter notifying Moreland of her appointment.

Students honored

ESB Financial awarded three Emporia High School students the Kansas Bankers Association’s Governor’s Scholars Award with a $100 savings bond on May 5. The students were Corinne Hirata Edds, daughter of David and Tracy Edds; Joel Grimsley Bland, son of Paul and Lendi Bland; and Joel Timothy Christiansen, son of Dwight and Jeanine Christiansen. ESB Financial established this award in 1986 in conjunction with the Kansas Bankers Association’s program to honor the top one percent of Kansas high school seniors.
