Substation tabled

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Lyon County Planning and Appeals Board members tabled a request for a utility substation by Lyon-Coffey Electric during Wednesday’s zoning meeting.

The request was tabled until further review for another location. Neighbors expressed strong opposition to the location of the proposed substation .

The proposed utility substation location is on the northwest corner of Road 170 and V in Lyon County off of Old Highway 50, said Samuel Seeley, Lyon County zoning administrator and flood plain manager.

It's for the SOUTHwest corner of the property. Right by the road for all to have to see and hear. If it was the northwest corner, none of us would care since it would be out of sight. And thanks for the Monday article where no fact checking with the electric coop was done and got everyone really upset on both sides. The Gazette needs to do a better job of double checking facts before publishing stories.

I don't know exactly how big a substation is but that must be a big table.

Ha ha, seriously!

Actually that was part of the problem. No one was clear how big the darn thing was going to be, conflicting dimensions were given. Then the Gazette compared it to something totally different in an article Monday. It is a huge box plus 2 big platforms made of telephone poles with 3 transformers on one and 3 huge (6' by 2') convertors or something on the other. It would be right in front of the next door neighbors front porch. Yeah, that will be scenic! I live 1/2 mile away and would see the stupid thing every time I looked west plus drive by it all the time. It'll have a lovely hum too. All so APAC can stop using diesel generators and switch to electric motors. But the electric coop members will be stuck with 25% of the cost (about $75,000) and the only benefit we'll get is a little less power flickering. OOOH, be still my heart. That's worth it. And they wonder why we're pissed off. We were pissed before we knew we'd have to pay part of this eyesore. The coop didn't consult anyone before they paid for the surveying etc. Just decided they wanted it in the corner and the heck with the people who will actually have to live near it. I am very proud of our county commissioners for telling the coop they should have checked with the neighbors first and to go back and see if they can't move it north a little ways to get it out of line of sight of the next door neighbors. Considering 6 households showed up to protest, I think the coop got the message they stepped into it.

I lived under high power lines as a kid and the sound of the hum was really relaxing as I ate my paint chips. Of course now with regulations on lead base paint it's harder to come by the really good chips.

crack in nut sack - you must live a lonely, pitiful existence. you have nothing positive to say. you're views of this world are completely one-sided (obviously apparent by your smoking ban issues) where you can't see how this would affect those having to stare at this substation daily. how'd you feel if the electric coop elected to put it in your front yard and you had no choice in the matter?

seems like you need to grow up

No sack 'o crack, if I owned a bunch of land in the middle of nowhere I'd be more than willing to let them use it as a wind farm! I've seen a few in Utah and they look very nice and provide efficient power. Your assumptions are as weak as your mind.

You speak about "backward thinking" yet having our rights as Americans taken away by the smoking ban is the very essence of backward thinking - and before you say anything, I'm an avid NON SMOKER, but I didn't spend MY time in Iraq and Pakistan to have single minded people like you take that away from those who do smoke.

As far as I can see from the map you so graciously provided and it being a rather small substation, I'm assuming it'd "benefit" very few households...........so yeah, have them vote on it. You've already heard from a few who already live in the area where it's only going to provide FEWER brown / blackouts in their power.

Well, crack, we could move if we could a) afford to and b) find someone willing to buy a place overlooking a substation. We're just asking them to move it a few hundred feet north. Not too great a compromise. And it's a T intersection and it's on the north side of 170 but the EAST side of V so it still doesn't make sense how they worded it. Maybe you could drag your whiny butt out there and look at the area before you shoot off your mouth. There's 40 freaking acres in that property and they choose the one right by the only neighbor?! And the fact that it is only for the benefit of a single company on the north side of I-35 yet is going to be put where we have to deal with it makes everyone mad. I think those of us who live out there have a right to be upset. Get in your car, crack, drive east on 6th Street until it turns into 170. Stop when you get to the water tower and radio tower. The WEST property line is where they want to put it. Right smack in front of the neighbors nice front porch. Stand there and look south (across the road if you're directionally impaired) and see the nice scenic view. And imagine buying a house and building that porch for that view and being told too bad, we're building a huge metal box and putting up giant poles right there so APAC can have more power. Not for your benefit but so a company can go off diesel generators. Most reasonable (I use the term loosely) people should be able to understand why we're upset.

madpoet, I'm sorry that you guys are having to deal with this stuff out there. arguing with crack is as wasteful as smoking it. he/she is so single minded that it's just a lost cause. I'd like to see crack move to somewhere he/she would fit in easier.......like san francisco

I must appologize, but I just have to comment on this one !
Am I right in assuming that this is a county matter ?
If so, why are all the NUTS who live in the City of Emporia concerned about county business and what affects the people who live outside Emporia in the County anyway ! It would seem to me that since County people have no say or vote in City matters, City people would or should have no say or vote in County folks governmental matters, am I right or wrong on this ? I mean, after all, fair is fair and right is right !
And since crackinsack, lives in the City, why is he/she getting involved and when you start arguing your personal rights with crack, that will be like arguing with a dead horse !
And a little advice to you county dwellers, remember one thing about crack and some others, his/her main arguement will be if " if it is necessary and beneficial, then it is a good thing, now matter who wants it or doesn' t want it and those who oppose anything, crack will inevitably be for it !
To all you county dwellers, LOL, you will need it !

Thank you methusla. People who live in the city don't have a clue about county issues. Those of us who live in the county work and shop in town (and some have lived there for a time) and have a better clue about Emporia life than Emporians do about country life. It was the secrecy of the thing that fired everyone up more than anything. When I saw the surveying I assumed the owner was selling her house to move to town since her husband died recently. It happens a lot. It wasn't until the zoning board sent a letter to the next door neighbors that anyone knew a thing about a substation being built out there. There's so much open land out there that we couldn't believe they wanted to put it right in front of the only house along that property line. I mean, what's a few hundred feet farther back? Why would you want to put it up just yards from a rather busy paved road? It made no sense to us. The coop did explain why it had to be in that area but not why they didn't check with the Pitchfords first. They will pay for that oversight since they've been asked to redo it for a site further north. So it's not just that they want to build a substation near a home, it's the whole situation that has our backs up.

Crack, how many folks that live in the county subscribe to the EMPORIA GAZETTE ?
And why do you think that these folks who live in the county, who by the way, spend their money in the City and subscribe to the local newspaper, have no right to air their opinions, views and grievences on an open public forum or the newspaper that they support, by subscribing to said news paper ?
As I see it, since the smoking ban thing has supposedly been settled, you no longer have anything to complain about and jump on the first situation of oppertunity, this matter no longer concerns you, since you no longer live in the county.
Crack you need to ask yourself why, not everyone on these forums particularly likes a butinski, such as you or others !
You need to stop trying to dictate and tell others how to live their lives and do what you believe is best for them !
In plain words, BUT OUT !
I appologize to all you citizensliving in the County for interfering in your matters, but the selfish control freaks, just don't seem to know when to " tend to their own knitting " !

methusla (anonymous) says...

crack,

The people living in the county around the debated sight, did not ask for your " NOSEY CITY OPINION " , since it doesn't concern you in the least !
Oh, and it would seem that this utility sub station tried to be put past the people in a sneaky manner, like another certain group tried to do recently, in the City !
And the only hobby you need is to " tend to your own knitting " and let the people that are really affected by this situation take care of their own situation, problems and let them resolve this without interferance from you or anyone else, that is not affected by this situation !
Again, I appologize to you county citizens for butting into your affairs, but some people just can't seem to keep from trying to impose their unwanted and biased beliefs, will, control and extremely biased comments onto those who do not want them or need them !

The people whom live near the proposed substation have another route to solve their problem. We have a Board of Directors whom the Manager answers to, they are well paid for their job as the a Director. All you need to do is call the Emporia or Burlington Office and they have to tell you whom represents your area. They are your sounding board and you should use them. You all so have the right to attend a board meeting the fourth monday of the month to talk to the board.
They are your voice in this matter.
