Open auditions for Young Thespian Players’ upcoming plays will be held on Saturday, May 23, at 1 p.m. at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St.
Organizers Penni Hansen and Susie LaGault are looking for children 8 years of age and older who want to perform in plays.
“You don’t need to have anything prepared — we’ll read a little, move a little and sing a little,” a news release stated.
YTP will present “Winnie-the-Pooh” on July 16 and 17 at The Granada Theatre and “The Story of Hansel & Gretel (a musical)” on Aug. 27, 28, and 29 at the Arts Council.
The Granada performance fulfills a goal the Young Thespians have aimed toward for the past five years. Hansen and LeGault took members of YTP on two tours of the Granada; one was when the stage area was nothing more than a pile of dirt. The second tour was of the finished building, and the women said the young actors were amazed as they listened to each other speak on-stage, with their voices carrying to the top row of the balony.
“It was a really fun experience,” Hansen said.
The Granada’s professional environment demands that the Young Thespians take their costumes and scenery to a higher level.
The group will rent costumes for the Granada performance, with funds from recent donations.
