Road closing on Wednesday

Road closing on Wednesday

Road 40 between Roads C and D will be closed on Wednesday so workers can begin replacing a bridge.

A spokesperson for the Lyon County Road and Bridge Department estimated the road would be closed approximately six weeks. Progress will depend on weather conditions.

Health Fair for the public

The Grace United Methodist Church, 2 Neosho St., will hold its annual Health Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

There will free screenings for cholesterol, blood sugar, pulse and blood pressure; Lion’s Sight Bus with free vision and hearing checks and hearing aid cleaning; donations to the Bloodmobile for those who call (620) 475-3632 for appointments; Mental Health Center, depression screening; health information and displays covering all aspects of health, including mind, body and spirit, according to a news release.

Door prizes will be awarded at the fair, which is open to the public.

Truck touching

“Touch a Truck” for children will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Emporia Recreation Center parking lot. There is no charge, but parents are required to stay. According to a press release, this is “a chance to get up close with some of the interesting vehicles that exist in our community. Ask questions and learn about different vehicles.”

Rain cancels the event.

Open house for Buck Fund

Girl Scout Troop 30039 will sponsor an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Buck Fund Catty Shack, 1018 Commercial St. A news release from the troop stated the event has been planned to help more animals find a “loving forever home.” These animals have been abandoned, left to starve or dropped off because their owners can’t keep them. The animals are being helped by members of the Buck Fund.

People also can donate food, toys, kitty litter or other items. There will be a box available for merchandise donations on Saturday. The troop will not be able to accept money during the event.
