Emporia State’s men’s 400-meter relay team broke its own school record, and Brooke Kent earned an automatic qualifier in the long jump at the ATG Sports Twilight Qualifier on Saturday at Welch Stadium.
The 400 relay team of Derwin Hall, Josh Schuler, Kenton Lonberger and Sam Williams set the new ESU standard with a time of 40.57 seconds, which ranks as the sixth-best time in the nation. Hall also earned a provisional qualifier in the 100 meters with a time of 10.56, one of 11 provisionals the Hornets earned on the day.
Kent’s long jump mark of 19-4.75 was good for Saturday’s championship and is the second-best distance in Emporia State history. It also placed her fifth in the nation this year. Right behind her in second place was Renae Weaver, whose leap of 18-5.25 also was a provisional qualifier.
