Presbyterians to receive award

Sunday, May 10, 2009

May is National Preservation Month and Emporia will celebrate the month with preservation week from May 11 through May 17.

There will be an event at 11 a.m. May 17, the J. Brinkman Preservation Award will be presented to a group that has demonstrated effort in historical preservation. The award will go to the Emporia Presbyterian Church on Eighth and Commercial Street. The presentation will be at the church following the morning service.

On May 14, Emporia Main Street will coordinate with the Lyon County Historical Society and Lyon County Museum to present historic walking tours to fifth graders from Lowther South. The tour will include the Granada Theatre, Presbyterian Church and the Lyon County Historical Museum. Students will be given a history of each building and a description of why the building is significant to Emporia. Tours will feature information on design and preservation, created by Emporia Main Street Design Committee and snacks at the Lyon County Museum, also provided by the Design Committee.

Since the National Trust created Preservation Week in 1971 to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts in America, it’s an annual celebration.
