Spartans cannot hold onto early lead

Friday, May 8, 2009

The Emporia High soccer broke its two-game scoreless streak and even led for awhile on Thursday at Hayden.

But Hayden scored three unanswered goals to to win 3-1 and give the Spartans their third straight loss.

Jordan Sosa gave EHS a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 12th minute on a Joslyn Barton assist. The Spartans had not scored in five of their last six games going in. But once again, the Spartans were outshot by a large margin — 34 to 6 — and could not keep Hayden off the board.

Hayden tied the game in the 29th minute, took the lead three minutes into the second half and added another goal in the 71st minute.

“Finally got on the board first tonight, but we were unable to hold the lead,” EHS coach John Decker said. “Played with more aggressiveness for the first half tonight, but we could not keep the intensity for the second half and gave up two more goals in the second half.”

The Spartans dropped to 5-8-1 with the loss. They are back at home against Blue Valley on Monday.
