Softball postponed
The Emporia Recreation Commission announced late Thursday that the beginning of the adult summer softball leagues has been postponed until the week of May 18.
The commission said the season was being delayed because of unsafe playing conditions in the outfields of the Kiwanis East and Kiwanis West fields at Santa Fe Park.
History workshop
The Chase County Historical Society will host a free workshop at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 301 Broadway, Cottonwood Falls. There will be a series of short presentations on practical tips for preserving and collecting family history.
Cinco de Mayo
Emporia’s Cinco de Mayo celebration will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Las Casitas Park on West South Avenue. The two-day event will include vendors, dancing, a parade and a fiesta program, including the crowning of a “Little King and Queen.” Sunday’s activities begin at noon.
This is the 11th Cinco de Mayo celebration to be held in Emporia. The event, literally “The Fifth of May,” celebrates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
The fiesta is open to the public.
