THE EMPORIA HIGH SCHOOL forensics team, which did well in the State Speech Contest in Topeka.
F Emporia school district administrator Patricia Smiley and EHS senior Jose Rios, who received top state awards for their outstanding accomplishments in language learning and education.
• Janice DeBauge, who received the 2009 Liberty Bell award form the Lyon -Chase County Bar Association. The award is given to one area resident who embodies the spirit and principals of the rule of law.
• The Emporia Farmers Market, which drew a record crowd on the first market of the year. More than 100 people attended and shopped the 17 vendors.
• Organizers of the Cinco de Mayo festival. The event will take place this weekend at Las Casitas Park.
• The Emporia State University softball team, which won its sixth straight MIAA tournament.
• Sara Schwerdtfeger, who was named Gambino’s and 96.1 The Wave’s Teacher of the Month for April. Schwerdtfeger is a sixth-grade teacher at Lowther North Intermediate School.
