The Emporia Area Local Food Network is pursuing a local food initiative and growers are needed within a 45-mile radius of Emporia. The Emporia Area Local Food Network is a group of community members dedicated to bringing more local, fresh and organic foods to area consumers. The goal of the local food initiative is to develop more local food from small roadside stands, farmer’s markets and large producers to provide for local institutions. Full implementation of the project may take two years with possible food production within one year.
Interested individuals are needed to supply fresh, local food to community organizations; schools, restaurants, colleges, nursing home facilities, wholesalers, etc. Producers must be willing and able to contract for large amounts of food with various organizations.
“We are trying to get large consumers and large producers together to determine how the producers can meet the consumers needs at a local level,” said Bill Hanlon, director of the Flint Hills Technical College Sustainable Living Center.
A meeting for those interested in participating in the local food initiative will be held on Tuesday, May 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the conference center at Flint Hills Technical College, 3301 W. 18th Ave.. Emporia, Kansas. Participants are asked to RSVP, if possible.
“There is definitely the demand, we just need to figure out how to meet it,” Hanlon said.
