Bill Hanlon, director of the Sustainable Living Center at Flint Hills Technical College was one of several individuals from across the nation presenting workshops and sessions at the Affordable Comfort conference in Kansas City, Mo. April 27-30. Hanlon presented a four hour workshop on building high efficiency homes to builders, home energy raters, and engineers from across the country and Canada. Affordable Comfort Inc. is a national organization working on developing and educating the public as to how to build more affordable, high quality, healthy, and energy efficient homes throughout the United States. The Affordable Comfort conference is the longest running “Green Building” conference in nation, with a West coast conference each spring and national conference each year. Next year’s conference will be held in Austin, Texas.
Flint Hills Technical College’s Spring Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 23 at 2 p.m. at White Auditorium. Over 200 students are graduating with their high school diploma, technical certificate or associate of applied science degree. Bryan Crouch, graphic arts technology instructor, will be the commencement speaker. Crouch is a 1998 graduate of FHTC with an Associate of Applied Science degree in graphic arts technology. Upon graduation Crouch worked for IS Advertising, an in-house print shop for Birch Telecom, and became their production manager. Crouch also worked at Professional Printing as a sales representative before coming to FHTC to begin his teaching career in 2003. The National Anthem will be sung by Tate Neil, a student graduating with his Associate of Applied Science degree in automotive technology.
Two Hartford High Schools seniors enrolled at Flint Hills Technical College will be receiving the Kansas Board of Regents Vocational Education Scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year. Joseph Gilligan, majoring in computer program design and development and Logan Grieder, majoring in graphic arts technology, will both receive the $500 scholarship based on their qualifying scores on the vocational scholarship test. The Vocational Education Scholarship Program was established by the 1987 Kansas Legislature to provide financial assistance to full-time students who enroll in designated one or two-year vocational programs.

The schedule may be picked up at the FHTC Student Services Office, Emporia Workforce Development Center, Emporia Public Library, Lyon County Extension Office, Lee Beran Recreation Center, or online at www.fhtc.edu!
