Four teams are in competition for the Flint Hills League baseball title as the regular season winds down, and Council Grove has continued to take care of its own chances with its performance on the field.
The Braves swept Lyndon in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Council Grove, stretching their recent run to nine wins in their last 10 games. An eight-run first inning, in which 11 batters went to the plate, carried the Braves to a 13-1, five-inning victory in Game One. Dusty Maas and Scott Bowles each went 2-for-2 for the Braves, and Maas belted a triple with the bases loaded. Broc Finch went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs. Council Grove starter Wes Roddy went 4 1/3 innings before Sean Carr got the game’s final two outs. Despite walking six batters, Roddy won his third game in three starts.
The Braves put away Game Two with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and went on to win 7-2. Carr and Roddy had RBI singles in the sixth to provide the extra cushion, and Carr hit a home run in the first inning. Collin Johnson singled home a run in the second inning, and Broc Finch walked with the bases loaded to bring home another run in the fifth.
