Make way for the new

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

Today, the Emporia city commissioners listened to public comment on whether two buildings north of the Granada should be torn down to make way for a new Emporia Arts Council building.

Because the proposed building would be next door to the historic Granada Theatre, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Kansas State Historical office, as a matter of protocol, declined the demolition permit until the city commission could hold a hearing to see whether there are any “prudent and feasible” options for the buildings. The city commissioners will make the final decision on the demolition permits.

To have a vibrant downtown, we need a mix of old and new. There is no doubt buildings like the Granada and Kress Center give our downtown a rich heritage and add character. But new buildings like the Granada Lofts are an example of the impressiveness and excitement a new building can bring to our downtown.

The proposed arts center is a perfect complement to the Granada Theatre and will give our community first-class arts facilities on main street.

The two old structures in question do not add much to our downtown and the city commissioners should allow for their demolition.

I agree. While I think that the Historical Society means well, they can sure be a pain in the rump on occasion.

I second that emotion. Unless the two buildings in question have some significant historic value (Lincoln was shot, Clinton enjoyed a cigar), a well-designed new structure would be far more beneficial to our city.
