Two recent trends continued during the Emporia High softball team’s doubleheader against Topeka West on Tuesday: rain making outdoor athletic events a soggy proposition and the Spartans’ continuing struggles with the bat.
Unlike a number of EHS games, meets and matches in recent weeks, Tuesday’s games weren’t postponed by the afternoon’s light, steady rain. But the Spartans could have wished they were after dropping Game One 7-0 and seeing a pitcher’s duel get away from them in Game Two. Callie Wright’s three-run homer over the center field fence in the top of the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie and spoiled the Spartans’ best chance in some time to pick up a win. They went on to lose 6-1, dropping their 11th game in a row, but managed to feel positive about the second game afterward.
