The Emporia City Commission tabled the purchase of new outdoor warning sirens until its next meeting to look into opportunities for grant money at its action meeting on Wednesday.
The commission has been looking at various options for new warning sirens for some time, and hopes to have them purchased and installed as soon as possible.
Emporia police chief Gary Smith and city purchasing officer Tim Frevert put together four options for new sirens from Blue Valley Public Safety ranging in price from $149,559 t0$167,021.
Commissioners indicated that they were leaning toward the cheapest option, which will provide a digital voice notification system at Jones Aquatic Center.
Once the purchase is approved, the system would take four to six weeks to deliver. Upon delivery, the company said they could have the sirens running in five days to a week.

I'm glad to see that Smith & Frevert are trying to fix the sirens - finally. I've lived here 35+ years and the sirens never worked correctly all at the same time. Ther would be rotation but no sound at this one, sound but no rotation at that one, nothing at this one, etc etc and all the city ever did was to put a band aid on the problem just like they did everything else.

I'm wondring if I was injured in tornado because the sirens didn't go off and you weren't able to get to a storm shelter if you could sue the city for medical bills?
