The Emporia High School Forensics Team ended the season Saturday with a strong finish and the promise of strong seasons to come, according to Coach Scott Bonnet.
EHS junior McKenna LeClear took second place in original oration in the state contest, leading a very strong team performance.
Bonnet said, “She was the state runner-up by an eyelash,” missing out on the state championship by one ranking.
In informative speech, sophomore Oscar Lara finished fourth, sophomore Matt Parra finished ninth and sophomore Sonia Lara finished in 11th place. Freshman Baxter Vaz was seventh in oral interpretation of prose. “It’s good to see the kids carrying on the strong Emporia forensics tradition that we’ve seen for so many years,” Bonnet said. “All of our entries finished in the top 14 in all events.”
Other top-14 performances included: junior Drew Bonnet in oration and extemporaneous speech; LeClear in informative; senior Jake Schaefer in informative; junior Hector Urbina and Sonia Lara in interpretation of poetry; senior Adam Helmer in serious solo acting; freshman Tagan Trahoon in humorous solo acting; sophomore Zach Windsor in extemporaneous speech; junior Lindsey McDaniel and sophomore Anita Muniz in interpretation of prose.
“I think we had a great season, particularly for such a young team. We were predominately freshmen and sophomores,” Bonnet said. “I’m really excited for the future as 14 of our 16 entries will be back for next year.”
