Extra Toad Hollow Days
The annual garden tour at Toad Hollow Daylily and Iris Farm has been extended to two weekends this year.
Nina and Gaylord West, who own Toad Hollow, will be hosts for the tours, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily on Saturday and Sunday and on May 16 and 17. Nina West said that the farm still is in “spring garden” mode, and blooms are abundant. The Wests ask that pets not be brought to Toad Hollow for the tour.
The farm can be reached by driving east on Interstate 35 to Exit 135, south on Road R1 to Road 170, then east one block.
Olpe city meeting
The Olpe City Council meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall.
The agenda includes the swearing-in of elected officials; approval of expenditures; out of town guest; comments from the public (10 minutes limit); Fire District 1 Fire Chief report about the fire station addition; nuisance properties; 2009 street repairs, sidewalks, water tower-select logo, etc.; elect treasurer and council president, appoint city attorney, clerk, financial institution, newspaper and fire chief; park improvements, budget, capital improvement, special highway, special parks and recreation; reports from maintenance supervisor, city clerk; mayor’s comments; adjournment.
Sixth-graders invited
Lowther North Intermediate School invites all current sixth grade students and their parents to participate in a scavenger hunt from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Emporia Middle School. The goal of the evening will be for parents and students to become familiar with their new school before they attend next fall.
“Your attendance is highly encouraged and LNIS staff looks forward to seeing you there,” stated the news release.
Reception for Hartsook
The Emporia Public Library is saying “goodbye and good luck” to Bev Hartsook, children’s services assistant, with a reception at 3 p.m. Friday in the library’s large meeting room. The public is invited. Friday is Hartsook’s last day. “Known as Ms. Bev to many Emporia families,” she has worked at the library since August 1999. She is moving to Russell where she grew up and still has family. She will be the activities director at Sterling House in Russell.
Band to play
“Antennas Up” will perform at Beer:30, 402 Merchant St., Friday, with doors opening at 8 p.m. The show starts at 9 p.m. The band released their debut, self-titled album on April 14.
Democrats to meet
The Lyon County Democrats will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Best Western Regency Gardens, 3021 W. Highway 50. The public is invited.
Republican women
The Lyon County Republican Women meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kuhn’s Little Red Schoolhouse, 1925 Road 175. There will be the 3rd Annual Membership Chocolate Extravaganza. The speaker will be Kansas National Republican Woman Helen Van Ettan. All interested women are invited to attend and bring a friend.
