The first day of the Emporia Farmers Market saw a record turnout despite cool temperatures.
Steve Graham, a volunteer at the market, which has been in Emporia since 1982, said there were around 100 people lined up at 8 a.m. Saturday at Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street waiting for the starting bell to ring.
“This is the biggest turnout we’ve had on the first day,” Graham said Saturday.
Graham said this year will be one of the biggest years the Emporia Farmers Market has had and he expects to shatter records all year long for turnout and number of vendors. The market has 18 new vendors this year.
“There’s a lot more variety this year,” he said.
Graham said the market has high-quality items. He said next week asparagus and spinach will arrive.
Tracey Graham of the Emporia Farmers Market said she was very excited about Saturday’s turnout.
“This is way more than we usually have at the start,” she said.
The market will begin at 8 a.m. every Saturday through October. Beginning June 17, the market also will be held from 5 p.m. Wednesdays until sellout. The market is at Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street. For more information on the market or to become a vendor call 343-6555 or e-mail tlcfh@yahoo.com. We not only broke records for first-day sales this year, we DOUBLED our previous record!
Just another example of good people appreciating the great local foods and other products available right here in our home town!
