On Tuesday, the Emporia High soccer team busted out of a three-game scoreless streak with six goals. On Friday, it was back to same old, same old.
The Spartans lost to Shawnee Heights 2-0, making it four of the last five games they’ve gone scoreless.
Shawnee Heights took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a long cross into the box that was volleyed to the far post past EHS goalie Melanie Nuessen.
The Thunderbirds scored again in the second half from a shot 18 yards out that snuck inside the far post.
Emporia High, meanwhile, could not find the net despite several good opportunities. The best came on a Jordan Sosa breakaway. The Heights goalie was pulled out of the net on the play and Sosa chipped it over her but the ball caught the cross bar and the Spartans could not put in the rebound.
With the loss, the Spartans fell back below .500 at 5-6-1.
“I was disappointed in our lack of intensity tonight,” EHS coach John Deck said. “This was a very winnable game and we let this one get away.”
