AMERICUS — This is the 10-year anniversary of the Flint Hills Antique Power Association.
A meeting was held at the Emporia Public Library on Jan. 10, 1999, for the purpose of starting a club for people interested in antique tractors and farm equipment. Gary Watts presided as chairman and led everyone through the naming of the club, the election of officers and a board of directors.
After discussion, Kale Bonebrake moved that the club be named the Flint Hills Antique Power Association. Veryl Barb quickly seconded and the majority of members accepted the name, which for most purposes was referred to as “FHAPA.”
The officers elected were Gary Watts, president; Jim Woods, vice president; Mark Say, secretary; and Marc Pierce, treasurer. Elected to serve on the board of directors were Veryl Barb, Levern Love, Don Berrie, Raymond Fowler, Roy Kuhlmann, David Orear, Gary Watts, Jim Woods, Mark Say and Marc Pierce.
Mark Say reported on the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association, EDGE. Roy Kuhlmann moved that the club pursue affiliation with EDGE for the purpose of insurance and club rules.
Dues were set for $20 a member and $10 each for additional members from the family.
Volunteering to write articles for local papers was Stan Fowler for the purpose of disseminating information about the newly-formed club.
The treasurer, Marc Pierce, was instructed to open a checking account at one of the local banks.
Information for this article was taken from the Jan. 10, 1999, minutes written by Mark Say.
There will be more history and information about the club as the year progresses.
