Burlington
The Coffey County Republican reported that The Burlington City Council reviewed a proposal recently that will increase sewer rates by 250 percent by Jan. 1, 2010. A rate increase is necessary to pay for a $12 million sewer improvement project slated to start this year.
The minimum sewer charge is $5.75 plus $1.90 for each additional 1,000 gallons of water used. On May 1, the minimum charge will increase to $11.50 plus $3.80 for each additional 1,000 gallons of water used. The rate on Jan. 1, 2010, will increase to a $14 minimum charge and $4.75 for each additional 1,000 gallons of water used.
Madison
The Madison News reported that a bed race will be featured this year at Madison Days. The Madison News will sponsor the bed races, which will be a part of the annual event in June. Other events include a hamburger feed, birdhouse and basket display and a Madison High School reunion.
Burlington
The Coffey County Republican reported that Coffey County has a 6.3 percent unemployment rate, the lowest employment rate in its eight-county area. The state average unemployment rate for March is 6.5 percent, up from 6.2 percent in February. Lyon County reported a 6.4 percent unemployment rate.
